I’m on vacation in Québec right now trying to avoid reading the news or thinking about current events. Instead I’ve been reading other things—I loved Zoe Thorogood’s graphic memoir It’s Lonely at the Centre of the Earth—swimming, and generally relaxing. The weather is hot and the smoke from the local wildfires has mostly cleared. At night loon calls echo across the lake. Yesterday evening we were visited by a great blue heron, which stood perfectly still for a long moment before flapping away again on its great wings. I’ll be back in a couple of weeks.
