I spend a couple of weeks every year around this time on a lake in Québec where my great grandfather built a cabin. When I was younger—not even that long ago—there was no electricity and no phone service. When we wanted to know what was happening elsewhere, we listened to the BBC World Service on a battery-powered shortwave. The lake doesn’t feel as remote as it once did, but its serene beauty still affords me the chance to read and reflect, to forget for a moment what’s happening elsewhere. I’ll be away for longer than usual this year, because I’m attending a family reunion in Switzerland after I leave here. While I’m gone I’ll post occasional pictures on Substack Notes. I’ll be back in August.
