I lost a kitten too, once. I had named him Round, because he seemed like the most well-rounded kitten of the litter. The other kittens were some mix of white and black; this one was all grey.

Round was my favorite of the bunch. But I was too distracted, reading stuff online I guess, and I didn't notice early enough when he got sick. By the time I started giving him my attention again, it was too late.

My wife informed me of the death, but didn't care at all. We had an appointment and she didn't want any risk of being late. "Are you done?" was all I remember her saying. She seemed miffed about my attention to the matter.

We were in the Philippines and she's a Filipina. The town was filled with stray cats struggling to survive, and it was normal for everyone to ignore them. I had been feeding two of the strays and shooing the others away, so as to limit my spending on them―it didn't cost much, but I was both unemployed and frugal, and I think the cats themselves were doing most of the shooing work. It turned out one was a girl and she had, oh, I don't remember, 7 or 8 babies. I wasn't willing to help them out that much given my wife's total lack of interest in the whole thing. But I gave them food and water, tried to care for them, tried to keep them alive, taking them inside the house when they got sick, which wasn't unusual given the tropical heat and the dirty water in the ditches outside. I tried to get the mother spayed, but she escaped the box as I carried her to the vet. By the time I managed to capture her again, I thought she might have gotten pregnant and said so to the vet, which was a mistake, since they're Christian and spaying would count as abortion.

On another occasion I was crossing the busiest street in town and saw a little dead kitten on the southeast street corner. No one paid any attention to it. I moved its body from the sunlight into the shade, petted it, expressed my sympathy, said I was sorry, and moved on.

😢

There's a lot of death in the world. We can't really grieve it all. But when we get to know animals as individuals it's hard not to feel their loss.
